Hi Carolyn,
There are no hard and fast rules about number of cards to draw. If you’re using a spread with defined positions and positional meanings, then you generally would only draw as many cards as positions in the spread.
Some readers will start with one card, interpret it, draw another one, interpret that one and keep doing that until they get a card that either doesn’t make any sense or they get one that seems a pretty definitive end to the reading.
For me, if I were drawing cards for a positionless reading, I would only draw 3 or 5 cards, and probably only 3 cards.
You bring up the curiosity factor as the reason why you keep drawing more cards. From your experience, have you found those cards provide you with additional information that’s helpful or do they only confuse matters? If those additional cards are giving you useful information, then I would say that your process works for you, and you should continue with it even if other people say you shouldn’t. But if it’s not giving you useful info, then stop doing it.
If the additional cards aren’t working for you, what you might try is drawing your 3 or 5 cards and using the Shadow card from the bottom of the deck. So then you’d have either 4 or 6 cards. And if you find yourself still reaching for the deck out of curiosity, then after laying out your chosen number of cards, you should shuffle the remaining cards (or cut and reassemble the deck) so that you no longer know what the next card would’ve been.
